notarangelo. the scope of the disaster in japan is becoming clearer each day. the death toll continuing to rise and survivors are cut off from rescuers and aid. 686 known dead. government officials say it will be much higher. an explosion today blew the roof and walls off a nuclear reactor. nine people exposed to radiation. four trains have disappeared and not been located and 9500 people in one coastal town have not been accounted for. the tsunami went as far as six miles inland. more strong aftershocks today in japan, largest magnitude 6.1 this morning. and that's prompting new concerns at the country's nuclear reactors. charlie d'agata with what is calling this anxiety. >> reporter: raising anxiety across japan. a cloud of white smoke cover

thed nuclear complex after the blast. 170,000 people have been evacuated, 12 miles around the area. engineers are trying to get a handle on it and say the explosion destroyed the building that housed the reactor but not the reactor itself. the safety agency is reporting another emergency at a second reactor in the same complex. >> there is a lot of apprehension with people all throughout japan because there hasn't been a lot of information coming out explaining what is going on. >> reporter: the country is reeling from the biggest earthquake in its history and trying to cope with the widespread destruction caused by the monster tsunami it triggered. this video shot inside an airport terminal shows the 23- foot wave pushing inland and swallowing everything in its path. at a hospital surrounded by water, workers spelled out sos

on the roof. in the hard hit northeast hundreds are confirmed dead and in just one coastal town the report 9500 residents are still unaccounted for. dozens of countries are offering to help with rescues and the recovery. u.s. marines are already starting to deploy critically needed supplies. charlie d'agata, cbs news, tokyo. >> it was crescent city that saw the highest tsunami waves in the u.s. 8-foot surges. crews are waiting for safer conditions to begin clean up of the damaged harbor. there are at least 17 damaged and sunken vessels and also the smell of boat fuel and oil. in addition, there are rocks, logs and other debris that need to be cleared away. >> we do get a small tsunami once in a while or surge in here and it breaks the docks up but this is the worst i have ever experienced. >> the harbor is crescent city's life blood and the

sheriff says it is going to be hard to recover. this is a look at the wave coming into the crescent city harbor. authorities released the name of the man swept out to sea while taking pictures of the waves. 25-year-old dustin webber. he was with two other people when they were all washed into the ocean. the two other people managed to survive and swim to safety. even parts of northern california that did not suffer damage from the tsunami saw water activity. this was posted on youtube. he noted that this wave had to go through the golden gate before it hit emeryville so there must have been a larger wave hitting on an unprotected beach. the u.s. pledging to help japan any way it can. president obama is constantly monitoring new developments. the u.s. military efforts includes at least six navy ships headed towards japan from the western pacific and as far

away as malaysia and singapore carrying relief supplies. >> this is a huge disaster and we will do anything we are asked to do to help out. >> our counselors efforts are literally 24/7 to make sure we assist u.s. citizens and the japanese needs. >> they are sending rescue crews and rescue equipment. some of the japanese firefighters stranded in the bay area because of the quake are on their way home tonight. they have been here the last week doing emergency response training but the earthquake forced some of their flights to be canceled. they say they not only wanted to get home to help with disaster relief but also to be with their families. today they were able to rebook their flights and head home after service resumed from sfo to tokyo. well, on the way home from

when the bus flipped 14 people killed. horrific tour bus crash. they were on their way home from a casino when the bus flipped over. injuries to those that survived are so severe more of those passengers may die. >> reporter: firefighters fought to save the survivors of this crash saturday morning. the bus turned over and slid the length of a football field until a pole holding up a sign sliced off most of the bus' roof. rescue workers had to cut a hole in what was left of it to reach passengers.

>> we had about seven or eight people pinned in the rear of the bus. >> reporter: more than a dozen people died. first responders rushed at least 19 others to hospital. the worldwide tours bus was filled with people returning to new york city from the casino in conneticut. the bus driver swerved on i-95 to avoid a tractor trailer. >> the bus driver swerves all the way over to the right, strikes the guardrail. >> reporter: loved ones raced to area hospitals to check on the injured. >> broke her ankle and minor concussion. >> reporter: authorities directed others looking for information to this police precinct in chinatown near where the bus was headed. >> reporter: police escorted family members out of the precinct and took hem to hospitals. at least a half a dozen passengers were in critical condition so the death toll could climb. the national transportation safety board will investigate the accidents. police are lunting hunting the

driver of the tractor trailer. police are asking for help to find who shot a man in a parking lot at wal-mart. at first police couldn't find the victim because the 25-year- old had already gotten a ride to the hospital. the victim is expected to recover. right now police don't have a suspect nor a motive. anyone who saw anything is asked to call san leandro politician. an army soldier from alameda has been killed in afghanistan. 27-year-old staff sergeant eric trueblood died thursday from wounds he got when his unit was attacked in the kandahar province. trueblood's combat battalion was hit with an explosive device. ,,,,

san francisco today. gathered for the music from bag pipes and drums filling the air in downtown san francisco today. thousands gathered for the city's 160th st. patrick's day and festival. the festival just wrapped up a few minutes ago. organizers say more than a million bay area residents are irish descendants. >> beautiful day for the parade. >> arrived just in time. we do have strong storms along the coastline. >> a lot of sunshine. few high clouds moving on through much . clouds will start to be on the increase.

we could pick up rain drops at least north of the golden gate bridge. high cloud moving on through right now but pretty nice evening all around the bay area. temperatures not looking bad at all. mainly into the 50s at this hour although we are sneaking up into 69 in redwood city. looks like if you're traveling around the state we will see more rain drops. further north you go. a couple showers late in the day in the sacramento valley. the high country folks, if you're headed up there warm storms headed our way so looking at a mixture of rain and snow. some pretty breezy to windy conditions in the tahoe area for tomorrow so watch out for that. but staying unsettled looks like through to tuesday. a couple systems moving on through. not going to drop all that much rain. the rain will pick up in the latter part of the day as we head into tomorrow. so the clouds will start to filter into the bay area overnight tonight and then we will see that chance of rain north of the golden gate

bridge. on the increase heading through tomorrow. 7:00 p.m. tonight. you will see a few more clouds gathering around the bay area. and then overnight tonight a slight chance of those showers to the north. looks like though as we head toward morning just a lot of clouds moving on through so it doesn't look like a rain out for most of the bay area but watch what happens as we take you through the day. you'll begin to notice showers showing up in the north bay then spreading to the south as we head toward the afternoon the showers starting to be on the increase heading into the evening hours. coming down pretty good. temperatures not all that bad. a warm storm system mainly in the 50s and few 60s outside. but look at this. as we look toward the next few days. so we have got about a chance of rain just about every day over the next seven days. i think a chance of showers mainly on monday morning. then drawing things out. then by tuesday afternoon, more rain moves into the bay area. leftover showers come wednesday. i think a colder series of storms head in come thursday and friday and into next weekend. so, yes, not a total rainout all the way through that period
